(Reuters) - A Boston-area apartment was one focus of a wide-ranging police investigation on Tuesday as authorities pursued clues into who carried out a bombing attack that killed three people and wounded more than 100 others at the storied Boston Marathon.

Police overnight searched an apartment in Revere, about 6 miles northeast of Boston, that was the residence of a person whose connection to the event is under investigation, law enforcement sources said.

A stretch of Boylston Street near the race's finish line and the blocks around it were closed to traffic as police searched for evidence of the identity of who placed the bombs packed with ball bearings to maximize casualties.

It was the worst bombing on U.S. soil since security was tightened after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The White House said the bombings would be treated as "an act of terror" and President Barack Obama vowed that those responsible would "feel the full weight of justice."

In Boston, dozens of police and National Guard vehicles were parked around the cordoned-off area, which was empty of cars and pedestrians as authorities hunted for clues.

A banner that had marked the race's finish line still hung over the deserted street.

Police searched the Revere residence of a Saudi Arabian student who was injured in the blasts, according to law enforcement sources. One of the sources said the student was the main lead investigators are looking into, but he has not been labeled a suspect.

Katherine Gulotta, a spokeswoman for the FBI, which has taken over the lead in the investigation, declined to confirm or deny the reports. She said police planned to brief the media at 9:30 a.m. (1330 GMT).

Obama was updated on the investigation overnight by his homeland security and counter-terrorism aide, Lisa Monaco.

The president is due to be briefed on the explosions later this morning by FBI Director Robert Mueller, Monaco and other senior staff.

White House officials and investigators said it was too early to say whether the Boston attacks were carried out by a foreign or homegrown group, or to identify a motive.

Hospitals in the Boston area were planning surgeries for some of the victims, many of whom sustained lower leg injuries in the blasts, said Peter Fagenholz, a trauma surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital.

"We're seeing a lot of shrapnel injuries" from small metal debris, Fagenholz told reporters outside the hospital. Doctors treated 29 people, of whom eight were in a critical condition.

An 8-year-old boy was among the dead, the Boston Globe reported, citing two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation. A 2-year-old was being treated at Boston Children's Hospital for a head wound, the hospital said.

MAJOR CITIES ON ALERT

The blasts put police on alert in major cities across the United States, including Washington and New York City, the sites of the September 11 attacks.

The annual Boston Marathon, held since 1897, attracts an estimated half-million spectators and some 20,000 participants every year.

In Britain, organizers said the London Marathon would go ahead on Sunday despite the Boston attack, but security was being reviewed.

The Madrid Marathon also planned to proceed on Sunday, but security plans were under review, a Spanish official said.

"After what happened in Boston we'll have to look into whether we need to review our plans. Since yesterday we are coordinating with municipal security and local government," Pedro Rumbao, director of the Madrid marathon, told Spanish National Radio.

Runners who had traveled to the city for the race remained in shock on Tuesday morning.

Pat Monroe-DuPrey, of Winter Haven, Florida, ran with his wife, Laura, in a trip to mark their 10th anniversary after being married during the race.

He said he did not know what to make of the blast, which came as he was finishing the race in a state of exhaustion.

"You don't have a brain at 26 miles," Monroe-DuPrey said. "They got us off the course, and then I was panicking."

STON - The hotel that serves as the headquarters for the Boston Marathon was locked down on Monday after a security incident near the finish line. Two blasts were heard by reporters in the media center. A Boston Marathon spokesman told reporters that no one would be allowed in or out of the building.

A third explosion was heard just before 4 p.m., about an hour after the first two blasts. The police were apparently aware of that device before the explosion occured.

The explosions took place about four hours after the start of the men’s race, which meant that there were still several thousand runners yet to finish the race. One senior counterterrorism official said it was too soon to tell whether the explosions were related to terrorism.

The Boston police confirmed they were looking into the explosions, but made no further comment. Another senior United States government official said that the Boston police and the F.B.I. said they had received no reports in recent days about a threat of an attack on the marathon and that there was no warning on Monday.

Several news outlets reported that a loud explosion was heard on the north side of Boylston Street, near a photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another explosion was heard several seconds later.

The Associated Press reported that authorities were helping injured runners leave the scene and bloody spectators were being carried to a medical tent that was being used for runners.

Bruce Mendelsohn, who works in a building near the explosion, said on Twitter that he saw blood on the sidewalks and about a dozen casualties.

Big city authorities are typically on the highest levels of alert for events like a marathon, said Anthony Roman, a security expert.

“It is quite the counterterrorism effort,” said Mr. Roman, who runs Roman & Associates, a New York firm.

For major events in New York and other large cities, Mr. Roman said the police would typically weld manhole covers shut, while also examining the entire route just before the race. They would also place snipers on rooftops, with helicopters overhead. Analytic cameras in the city would also be used, he said.

“They have all the analytic cameras in the city focusing on the race with their advanced software network, reading license plates,” Mr. Roman said.

The Boston Marathon is one of track’s most storied events, established in 1897 and one of the six World Marathon Majors. The event typically attracts an estimated 500,000 spectators and requires certain qualifying times for runners to compete.

The course winds throughout downtown Boston as well as several outlying cities, including Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley and Newton.

Unlike many sporting events that take place in closed arenas, marathons are known and heralded for their sprawl, allowing throngs of spectators to line the 26.2-mile course.

Within minutes of the explosions on Monday, social media and cable networks projected the images of gray smoke on Boylston Street, with emergency crews on the scene.

After the explosions, a spokesman for the New York Police Department said security was being increased at hotels and other prominent locations in New York

The Sicilian Vespers - a beginning of the root of the rise of the Antichrist in Western Europe

In 1268, Charles of Anjou became King of Sicily. Pope Urban IV offered the Kingdom to Charles in order to keep it out of the hands of the Hohenstaufen family. However, the Sicilian people came to resent the Angevin rulers. Charles did not show great personal interest in Sicilian interests, and was primarily interested in the island as a starting point for a Mediterranean empire. He centered his government in Naples, on the Italian mainland, and only visited Sicily once. His troops plundered the island after Charles' original conquest from Manfred, who had taken over Sicily after the death of the Emperor Frederick. Later, Charles supplanted many of the landowners with French supporters and many Sicilian administrators with French officials. Despite an increase in government efficiency and increased trade during Charles' rule, the aloofness, indifference, and disregard for local traditions connected with the Angevins caused widespread discontent in Sicily.

By 1282, Charles was King of Sicily, Jerusalem, and Albania, ruler of Provence and other French territories, regent in Greece, and overlord in Tunis. His ambition was to go even further, conquer the Byzantine Empire, and become the ruler of the entire Mediterranean region. Charles' power and ambition brought him many enemies. One of these was King Peter I of Aragon. His wife, Constance, was from the house of Hohenstaufen and was seen by many as the legitimate heir of the Kingdom of Sicily. His Chancellor, John of Procida, had served both Frederick II and Manfred, and remained in contact with many enemies of Charles, especially in Sicily. Another enemy was the Byzantine Empire Michael, whom Charles hoped to supplant. Together, King Peter and the Emperor Michael planned a conspiracy against Charles centered in Aragon, Constantinople, and Sicily.

However, the Sicilian people took matters into their own hands. On March 30, 1282, Easter Monday, a large crowd of Sicilians where gathered outside a church near Palermo awaiting Vespers. A group of French officials joined them, despite the cold reception by the crowd. Some of the Frenchmen began approaching the Sicilian women, and when a French sergeant took a married woman away from the crowd, her husband stabbed him to death. The French rushed to avenge their comrade and where attacked and killed by the crowd. As the church bells throughout the city rang for Vespers, messengers ran throughout Palermo calling for an uprising. The Sicilians slaughtered the French and women who had married Frenchmen, invading houses, inns, convents, and monasteries. The leading official and some followers escaped to their castle, but where later killed. Meanwhile, however, the rebels where already in control of Palermo, which they declared an independent Commune.

In days to come, the revolt spread throughout the island. Cities and towns declared their independence, and the French fled or where massacred. In Calatafimi the Angevin official, William Porcelet, had gained the love of the people for his benevolence and justice and was allowed to escape to Provence. Sperlinga, which prided itself on being independent of the rest of Sicily, allowed its occupiers to flee safely to Messina. Finally Messina was the only major area still under French control. This was Charles' capital in Sicily, where the French forces where strongest and the Sicilians had benefited most from Angevin rule. However, the French governor angered the citizens in his attempt to consolidate his power in the region, and Messina joined in expelling the French and declaring itself an independent Commune. The Sicilian Communes, now essentially in control of the island, sent word to the Byzantine Emperor Michael and King Peter of Aragon hoping for aid.
King Charles and the Pope tried to convince the Sicilians to return to Angevin rule. When this failed, King Charles came to Sicily in August with troops to reconquer the island. Later that month, King Peter arrived with troops to aid the revolt. In the Commune of Palermo he was acclaimed King of Sicily, and set out to fight Charles' forces, besieging Messina. The war soon became centered on the Italian mainland, and Queen Constance of Aragon arrived in Sicily to govern as regent. Rule of Sicily passed entirely from the Angevins to the Spanish House of Aragon with Charles' death in January, 1285.

The existence of law leads necessarily to a profession whose business is the study and knowledge of the law; at any rate, if the law is extensive and complicated. At the time of Ezra and probably for some time after, this was chiefly the business of the priests. Ezra was both priest and scholar (copher). It was chiefly in the interest of the priestly cult that the most important part of the Pentateuch was written. The priests were therefore also in the first instance the scholars and the guardians of the Law; but in the course of time this was changed. The more highly esteemed the Law became in the eyes of the people, the more its study and interpretation became a lifework by itself, and thus there developed a class of scholars who, though not priests, devoted themselves assiduously to the Law. These became known as the scribes, that is, the professional students of the Law. During the Hellenistic period, the priests, especially those of the upper class, became tainted with the Hellenism of the age and frequently turned their attention to paganistic culture, thus neglecting the Law of their fathers more or less and arousing the scribes to opposition. Thus, the scribes and not the priests were now the zealous defenders of the Law, and hence, were the true teachers of the people. At the time of Christ, this distinction was complete. The scribes formed a solid profession which held undisputed sway over the thought of the people. In the New Testament they are usually called (grammateis), i.e. "students of the Scriptures," "scholars," corresponding to the Hebrew (copherim) = homines literati, those who make a profession of literary studies, which, in this case, of course, meant chiefly the Law. Besides this general designation, we also find the specific word (nomikoi), i.e. "students of the Law," "lawyers" (Matthew 22:35; Luke 7:30; 10:25; 11:45,52; 14:3); and in so far as they not only know the Law but also teach it they are called (nomodidaskaloi), "doctors of the Law" (Luke 5:17; Acts 5:34).

Sicilian Vespers: Bloody clash shaped Europe

Constantinople and the Roman Emperor, the true source of the Crusades and the resultant rape of Constantinople and which brought about the dissolution of a United Europe under the Papacy - this also brought in the the Middle Eastern Banking/Usury into Europe by way of the Phanariot district in Constantinople through Venice and into Central Europe. The Sicilian Vespers was caused by the Emperor in Constantinople. The Sicilian Vespers created the Mafia and in turn they were the model for much of the Revolutionary Anarchists that destroyed European civilization. They were also the model for the Irish and Jew Mobs later in American History, especially in Boston and Chicago and Canada. the Mafia is a close ally with the Freemasonic Vatican Jesuits/SMOM and the CIA.

The Sicilian Vespers is a phrase which refers to a bloody incident which took place on Easter Monday, 1282. At the Church of the Holy Spirit, half a mile to the south-east of Palermo, French officials mingled with the crowds to join in the festivities as the bells rang for evening prayer. The French were "overfamiliar" with some of the Sicilian women. Scuffles broke out. Daggers were drawn. Soon there were cries in the Sicilian dialect of "Death to the Frenchmen" ("Moranu li Franchiski!").

By nightfall, 2,000 French people in Palermo were dead, and the uprising spread to the other Sicilian towns. The outbreaks were not spontaneous: they had been planned by the enemies of the French – notably the Emperor in Constantinople and the King of Aragon. The long dominance of the island by Charles of Anjou was over.

Charles, the most powerful figure in the Mediterranean, had been on the point of invading Constantinople. Egged on by a succession of French, or Francophile, Popes, he had hoped not merely to regain Byzantium for the West, but also to subjugate the Eastern Orthodox Church to the authority of the Papacy.

With the Sicilian Vespers, there died any possibility of a universal Papacy dominating Christendom. The foundations had been laid for the phenomena that shaped modern Europe – the development of nation states, and, ultimately, of Protestantism. It is 50 years since Sir Steven Runciman's masterly book The Sicilian Vespers was published by the Cambridge University Press. It is one of those timeless works of history which is also a great work of literature.

Within less than 300 pages, he tells the whole complicated story of 13th century Mediterranean history – the struggles of the Hohenstaufen dynasty to maintain their power as Holy Roman Emperors after the death of Frederick II; the growth of the power of Aragon; the political machinations by the Popes; the doggedness of the Byzantine emperor Michael Paleologus. There is a supporting cast of dozens – it is a wonder that Runciman has made them all so vivid and yet the reader feel no muddle as his tale unfolds.

The story is about a single incident that fundamentally altered the whole course of European history. Yet out of all the details of rivalry between Guelf and Ghibelline, between French and German, between Angevin and Byzantine, there emerges an image as crystalline as a painting by Van Eyck. At the centre of it all is the chilly, unamiable figure of Charles of Anjou himself (brother of St Louis IX). Runciman wrote with wonderful eloquence, but he never overwrote. His narrative flows uncluttered by needless reference notes – there are some, but they nearly all refer to primary sources. His is the supreme example of a well-stocked mind not needing to show off all its wares.

Nor does he impede the central story by tedious allusion to secondary sources, and what Professor X thinks of Professor Y’s views of Professor Z. Instead, with a gentle, slightly mournful, multilingual guide, we are back in the Middle Ages themselves. He refers to Ottokar II of Bohemia or Pope Innocent IV as if he had known them personally, which, in a way, he had. As a background to much of the story is the extraordinary tale of Sicily itself, colonised first by Greeks, then by Byzantines, then by Muslims, then by the Normans.

Sicily was a genuinely multiethnic and multicultural society. Those who criticised the Archbishop of Canterbury recently for suggesting that there could exist parallel legal systems should read of the Sicilian model, where Muslim courts existed side by side with Christian ones. Everything worked well. It was when the French attempted to impose a monolithic structure on the fluid Sicilians that trouble started. The bloodiness is recounted with Homeric sorrow, but not without humour.

This historical masterpiece ends with the charming story of King Henry IV of France boasting in the 16th century to the Spanish ambassador that he could subdue the Spanish in Italy should the King of Spain try his patience too far.
